Leicester band Sisterland have recently released single Walking Wounded on label Fear and Records, they will appear on the next ArtRocker magazine compilation CD and have been named as one of Loud and Quiet’s bands of the week podcast alongside The Strokes. Futuresoundstemporary caught up with the band on the way down to Oxford in their VW for the Blessing Force music festival, which they were playing on the Sunday.

If you could have written any song ever, what would it have been?

Mark: Horse with No NameMark: by America.

Ian: Naive Melody Ian:by Talking Heads.

Bob: I really don’t know!

Mark: The theme tune to Iron Man!

Bob: No actually, I wish i had written Dope Smoker by Sleep.

What’s the best gig you’ve played so far as Sisterland?

Ian: We haven’t played a good one yet have we?

Mark: The last one, that was pretty good, at Old Blue Last.

FST: What was that for?

Ian: It was our Fear and Records single launch.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to in your life?

Mark: Oh! What was that band called from Philadelphia?

Ian: Need New Body?

Mark: Yeah! That was the best gig I have ever been to.

FST: Where was it?

Mark: The Looking Glass in Leicester. I didn’t think it was going to be a good night, but it turned out to be absolutely amazing. It was the best thing i have ever seen.

Bob: When I saw High on Fire in Nottingham when they supported Mastodon, I bit my hand so hard it bled! It was incredible, it blew my face off.

Ian: Mine would be the first ever gig I went to, Smashing Pumpkins when i was thirteen, at Birmingham NEC. Then the day after was the first time I ever bunked off school because I couldn’t handle going to school. It changed me!

What would you grab first if your house was on fire?

Ian: If Mark still lived with me, I would have said Mark! But I would grab my Grandad’s hook (Ian has a framed hook that belonged to his Grandad to unload ships on the Glasgow docklands in the 1930s)

Bob: That thing is well good.

Mark: My display cabinet. My empty display cabinet. Or Bob’s chilli sauce.

What are your plans for this year?

Mark: Produce a video. Well get someone else to do one but be part of it. Yeah do a music video and another single.

Ian: Get signed and not work anymore.

Sell out ASAP and get a sponsor?

Bob: I want to end up looking like from Wayne’s World when he wears loads of Reebok and has loads of cans of coke, just endorsed by everybody. That’s my goal. I want a figurine of myself.

So this Blessing Force gig you’re playing tomorrow, what is it exactly?

Mark: It’s essentially a small music festival now, in a warehouse.

Bob: There’s a load of art as well, loads of installation artwork by Tinhead who does all the Foals artwork.

Ian: Blessing Force has been set up by a guy called Andrew who started Foals, he coordinates all the bands playing at the festival. It’s gonna be fun!

Meke Menete have eked out a living digging around in Northern soil for sometime, flitting between monikers Youth, then Books, then Youth/Books. But now with a solid conceptual basis for their art, their existence has taken root and grown into a budding flower. Lonely Sexy Death creeps along with a dark mystery, as haunted vocals and distant ambient moods fill the spaces. However within it lies a quality that is very difficult to capture, and one which they manage to do so with aplomb. That quality is something similar to a burning soul, a yearning for life and the eternal yes! This track pretty much seems to cover the distance between illusory and the real, bringing to life a sense of affirmation. Listen to it below:

Once the hidden band of Camden Tribes have been creating a buzz recently, their songs show signs of early 90’s American bands, with the obvious link to Nirvarna and Pavement, yet with a helpful dose of english looseness. With an expected, but unconfirmed, single coming out soon we expect to be hearing more from Tribes in 2011. Hear We Were Children Below.

In it he takes you on a journey through some of the best music of the last few years that sits right on the edge of darkness. In oblivion we can master our thoughts, gather our strength and find fundamental understanding. So sit back and let the sound envelop you.

Carpark records prodigy Toro Y Moi has dropped another track, New Beat, from his next album and it’s a true funk masterpiece. New Beat will feature on Toro Y Moi’s forthcoming album Underneath The Pine due out on the 22nd February. We expect the album will move away from Toro’s original chillwave stance and move towards 70s infused disco having previously heard Still Sound the first single from Underneath The Pine. We wait patiently, for now, hear New Beat below.

With little known about them yet Love Inks are a mystery coming out of Austin at the moment, although FST is sure this won’t be the case for long with rumours of a record deal on the way. Love Inks create melodies with purpose against stripped back textures of guitar and analog drums. Here their latest track Blackeye below.

A big fat plug for my boys in Playhouse. Resident writer Stephen Smith and his crew have just cut their first demo since reforming as Playhouse and the sounds are almighty. Asteroids is a sleepy vision, a somnambulist’s reverie, carried with precision to the aching denouement. The beat acts as a shattering driving force, instilling a metronomic momentum that builds and descends with subtlety. It seems like a great embodiment of the atmospheric movement, of the sounds of the wind finding sanctuary in the coves of new build flats; yet it always manages to get back to that beat, so propulsive as if the handclaps themselves are elemental forces. As it finds its way out of hard-drives and web-servers it seems to have found similarities in new electronic soul movements and drone-y aesthetics. Find the band at Tumblr here. Listen to two new tracks Asteroids and Wait For It below:

Dissolve it in acid. Blur the line between death and life. Blur the line between reality and hyper-reality. I want vivid colours, a vibrating life of sensory highs , I want a world lived in dreams. Well, Boxcutter may be not be a powerful hallucinogenic, nor a timeless yogi, but he presents to me the possibility of a life lived beyond normality. Of increased aural sensitivity. TV Troubles moulds my mind like clay, you just have to let it in.

Taken from the album The Dissolve, to be released on Planet Mu, 25th April, this slice of hyper-Gamble and Huff describes vast spaces and minute moments, the Quantum Theory of electronic soul music.
